We rose at 4:30am to the sound of the monkeys and hurriedly left the camp for a morning drive at 6am. Our tour guide was Robbie, who was a great expert in all things that moved in the park. I’ve never come across anyone who knows so much about beetles, to Elephants to sausage trees (they exist in Zambia). He took us through the safety demonstrations and wisely told us not to talk loudly when approaching a leapord or lion. We climbed on top of the safari vehicle with a lovely old Belgian couple and drove around all morning witnessing impala fights, hipppos relaxing in the cool waters of the Luangwa river, elephants minding their children, giraffes munching the tall trees of the forest. But the most spectacular sight came during the evening when we were lucky to witness a leapordprowling alone in the forest and eventually climbing a tree (probably to hide from our gaze). It was a fantastic day and I’m glad to report that the not only were the safari staff welcoming, but so were the animals themselves. I hope to return in the near future, especially as it’s literally a stone’s throw from Chipata, so if anyone wants to join me, let me know!
