Not having a TV in Chipata is proving to be less difficult than I had imagined, especially as the quality of the local radio station is so good. I tune into 89.3 FM Radio Breeze (Zambia) everyday and it keeps me posted on the latest local, national and international news throughout the day. They even play non-stop BBC programmes from midnight til morning, so when I can’t sleep at night I turn on the radio and feel even more closer to home.Everyone at Breeze is great and there’ s a real spirit of quality journalism at it’s offices in town – they’ve won numerous national and local awards to prove it!When I went to visit the guys at Breeze, I was shown around their office, taking in the marketing department, the programme planning area and the recording studio! Vincent the technician even had time to fix my dying laptop. That’s how resourceful they are! They’ve also recently started doing children's programming at weekends, which allows the local kids to dabble into journalism and get the community talking about youth related issues. Not all programmes are broadcast in English. Throughout the day, Radio Breeze reaches out to the community in the local language of Chinyanja, which means Breeze can reach people in urban and rural areas in their own language on issues such as HIV/AIDS, nutrition, human rights as well as Gender issues. It’s more than just a music station, but more of a community radio station. I think it definitely lives up to its tag line:- “Breeze FM, lifting the spirits of the people”.
