The things I’m missing most from the UK are:1) tabloids.  Ridiculous, I know, but I was so sad to have to watch England playing appalling football at the same time as enduring a couple of bad decisions (which would in no way have made any difference to the ultimate outcome), and not have the chance to chuckle over the psychotic headlines and furious diatribes that I’m sure ensued.  Oh, to have heard 6-0-6 after that game against Algeria.2) various different poems and some other books.  Not that I’ve really had so many opportunities to read them – and my most desperate want was provided thanks to the miracle of email attachments (thanks, mum!).  But it’s just sad not to see them sat there waiting for me.3) sparkly water.  Oh, how I love it.  I really, really do.  Why doesn’t it form a basic part of every national diet?4) real coffee all of the time.  We have some set aside as a treat, but it is very expensive.  I did overdose quite heavily in my last two jobs, and my blood is probably having a post cold turkey party right now, but it does make me sad.  It seems to make me much worse at Old English, too.5) our ridiculously lovely and over-equipped Walworth kitchen.  Though our new home does have a nice kitchen and a BEAUTIFUL oven, which I’m itching to use.6) people– inevitably, primarily all of the new babies that various people were selfish enough to have just before we came here (not that I don’t love people older than 6 months too).  Thankfully, Nigeria’s population is crazily young and rapidly expanding, so there are babies everywhere all of the time.  And there’s a much more open attitude to babies in the workplace, so it’s not been uncommon to see a mother with a baby strapped to her back or in her lap at meetings.  Most joyously, one of our neighbours invited us to his 10th birthday party, taking place next Sunday afternoon.  I’m wildly excited.  Maybe there’ll be jelly.
