The first ever Kum’mawa craft market took place in Chipata on Saturday and it was a great success! The market was inspired by a few VSO volunteers as we had seen similar markets elsewhere, but not in Chipata or the Eastern Province (up until now!)Having seen the talent of local artists and craftsmen/women, we were inspired to see if we could work with them, to set up the first Arts and Crafts Market in Chipata. A Zambian committee was set up and the Kum’mawa Craft Market was born. The local term Kum’mawa (meaning ‘rising from the East’) was coined by the committee in reference to the fact that the vision of the market is to showcase the talent of rising stars in the Eastern Province of Zambia, giving them an opportunity to use the market to sell their high quality products. In a country, struggling with high unemployment, very little job creation and high illiteracy levels, many people in Zambia (and particularly in Chipata) struggle to make a living and secure their own livelihoods. It is hoped that this new Market will give local artists and craftsmen/women the opportunity to earn a living and showcase their talent. After a few scary logistics moments, the VIP guest of Honor, The District Commissioner attended the event, chatted with everyone involved and officially declared the Craft Market open. The market will be held on the first Saturday of each month, so if you’re in the area come and support the local artists of Chipata and the Eastern Province.I’m now off to try on my new earrings!
